Photoinitiator 2959

A Type I photoinitiator designed for UV-curable clear coatings and water-based UV dispersions, with a strong position in low-odor, low-migration formulations for paper, metal, plastics, and selected adhesive applications.

Photoinitiator 2959 is an efficient free radical photoinitiator with high reactivity, low odor, no yellowing, low volatility, insensitivity to oxygen inhibition, and high surface curing efficiency. Its unique active hydroxyl groups can easily be grafted onto polymer molecules and are soluble in water-based systems. It is suitable for varnishes, inks, coatings, adhesives, especially for water-based acrylic esters and unsaturated polyesters.

Photoinitiator 2959 has been certified by the FDA for use in food-contact-free adhesives. The general dosage is 1-5%.

Applications:

  • Used in UV curing formulations for wood, metal, plastic and paper surfaces.
  • It is particularly recommended for UV formulations where moisture needs to be evaporated through high temperature and gas flow before curing.

What is Photoinitiator 2959 used for?

It is used in UV-curable clear coatings, water-based UV dispersions, and low-odor formulations where low migration and low yellowing are important.

Is Photoinitiator 2959 the same as Irgacure 2959 and Omnirad 2959?

Yes. These are the names buyers most often use for the same material family, and CAS 106797-53-9 is the key identifier to match the product correctly.

What wavelength activates Photoinitiator 2959?

Published product data shows UV absorption peaks around 274–276 nm and 330–331 nm, which is useful when matching lamp output and cure design.
