Sulphur black 1

Sulphur Black 1 is the principal sulfur-class dye used to obtain deep black shades on cotton and similar cellulosic fibers. It is produced as an insoluble polymeric material and is applied through a reduction/solubilization step followed by oxidation to regenerate the insoluble black on the fibre.

Key Benefits

  • Deep, economical blacks with strong wash fastness — commonly used where cost & durability are priorities.
  • Simple dyeing sequence (reduction → dyeing → oxidation) compatible with common industrial setups.
  • Available in bulk flake/powder for large runs; suitable for denim & heavy-weight cotton shades.

Practical Dyeing Checklist

  • Prepare vat: add carefully measured reducing agent under stirring (follow plant SDS and local regs).
  • Bring to recommended temperature for your recipe (often 80–95°C depending on the recipe & fiber).
  • Add Sulphur Black 1 slowly as a paste or dispersion to avoid large agglomerates.
  • Dwell time: allow sufficient absorption, then remove fabric and oxidize (air or chemical oxidant) to fix black insoluble form.
  • Soaping & final wash to remove unfixed dye and reducing residues.

Why choose this grade?

Optimized for high depth and economical consumption in bulk dyehouses; manufactured under quality controls for lot-to-lot consistency.

Sulfur dyes give economical black with good wash fastness; vat dyes can give superior lightfastness but at higher cost and process complexity.

Applications:

Sulphur black 1 Mainly used for cotton, paper, leather, etc.

Is Sulphur Black 1 suitable for reactive cotton processes?

Sulphur dyeing is a different mechanism than reactive dyeing — sulfur dyes are reduction/oxidation applied and are typically preferred for economical deep blacks on cotton rather than for applications needing bright reactive colors.

What are environmental considerations?

Traditional sulfur dyeing uses sulfide reducing agents, which require careful effluent treatment. Low-sulfide and alternative reducing systems are available to reduce environmental load.

Can Sulphur Black 1 be used on synthetics?

Sulfur dyes are primarily for cellulosic fibers; some blends or modified processes can target other fibers but performance varies widely.
