Solvent Red 49 is an anthraquinone-based solvent dye renowned for its excellent color stability and wide compatibility.
Main characteristics and advantages
Solvent Red 49 exhibits the following core advantages, which are clearly specified in the standard ASTM D4062-18 :
- Superior color performance: It presents a bright crimson to magenta hue with high color saturation. The color strength reaches 100±5% (compared to the standard sample), and the hue deviation (ΔE) is less than 1.5, ensuring consistent coloring effects .
- Outstanding fastness properties: Its light fastness is rated 7-8 (according to ISO 105-B02), which is significantly higher than that of ordinary azo dyes. The heat resistance is stable at 180-220°C, and it can withstand short-term high temperatures up to 240°C without discoloration. Additionally, it has grade 5 acid resistance and grade 4-5 alkali resistance (ISO 105-C02 and ISO 105-E04) .
- Excellent solubility and compatibility: It has good solubility in various organic solvents—solubility ≥200 g/L in xylene, toluene, and ethyl acetate, and ≥150 g/L in butyl acetate and ethanol. It shows strong compatibility with alkyd resins, acrylic resins, and nitrocellulose, without causing precipitation or delamination.
- Low migration and good weather resistance: The migration resistance is grade 4-5 (ISO 105-G01), effectively preventing color bleeding between adjacent materials. Its weather resistance (QUV test) shows no obvious fading after 1000 hours of exposure, suitable for outdoor applications.
- Broad application scope: It is applicable to multiple substrates such as wood, plastics, resins, and textiles, and can be used in solvent-based coatings, plastic coloring, and printing inks, with strong adaptability.
Application
Mainly used for high grade wood, natural or synthetic leather color. And used in printing ink, vacuum plating, aluminum foil or other metal coloring, precious stones and glass color, appliance car coating, printing paste can, plastic coloring.
What precautions should be observed when applying Solvent Red 49 in wood coatings?
The application of Solvent Red 49 in wood coatings needs to focus on solvent matching, resin compatibility, and construction conditions, as detailed in the "Wood Coating Dye Application Guide" issued by the China Coatings Industry Association:
- Solvent selection and concentration control: Prioritize using mixed solvents of aromatic hydrocarbons and esters (e.g., xylene:ethyl acetate = 3:2) to improve dissolution efficiency. The recommended dye concentration is 0.3-3% of the coating total mass. Excessive concentration may lead to reduced film adhesion and increased brittleness.
- Resin matching test: It is highly compatible with polyurethane (PU) and acrylic resins, but needs to be pre-tested with nitrocellulose (NC) resins. Some low-quality NC resins may cause the dye to crystallize, resulting in uneven color .
- Construction and drying requirements: The coating should be stirred uniformly before construction to avoid color spots. The drying temperature should be controlled at 60-80°C, and the drying time should be no less than 2 hours. Rapid drying at high temperatures (exceeding 100°C) may cause the film to turn dark.
- Substrate pretreatment: The wood surface should be sanded smooth and free of impurities. For pine and other resin-rich woods, a sealer should be applied first to prevent the resin from reacting with the dye and affecting the hue.
What are the application requirements of Solvent Red 49 in plastics?
Different application scenarios have specific technical requirements, which are in line with the standards GB/T 19466.6-2004 (plastics) and GB/T 13217.7-2009 (inks) :
- Substrate and grade matching: For general plastics (PP, PE), the conventional grade of Solvent Red 49 is applicable, with a recommended addition amount of 0.05-0.2%. For engineering plastics (PA6, PC), the high-temperature resistant grade should be selected, which can withstand the processing temperature of 220-240°C without decomposition.
- Mixing and processing control: Pre-blend the dye with plastic pellets in a high-speed mixer for 5-10 minutes to ensure uniform dispersion. During extrusion or injection molding, avoid prolonged residence time at high temperatures (more than 10 minutes at 240°C) to prevent thermal degradation.
- Migration prevention: When used in food contact plastics (e.g., PP food containers), ensure compliance with GB 4806.6-2016, and the migration amount of the dye should be less than 0.01 mg/dm².
