Key benefits

  • Bright, stable green tone with good heat and light fastness in compatible systems.
  • Highly soluble in polar organic solvents and carrier oils; disperses evenly in hydrophobic matrices.
  • Available in high-purity grades for industrial and formulation use.

Characteristics and Advantages

Endowed with a triphenylmethane molecular structure, Solvent Green 3 exhibits unique performance advantages that make it stand out in the solvent dye family:

  • Distinctive and Saturated Color: It presents a bright emerald green shade with high coloring power—only 0.01-0.03% dosage is required to achieve uniform coloring in transparent polystyrene (PS), significantly lower than that of conventional acid green dyes <superscript:4.
  • Good Solubility Profile: Insoluble in water (solubility <0.1 g/L at 20°C) but well-soluble in organic solvents, with solubility of 12.5 g/L in ethyl acetate, 8.3 g/L in toluene, and 5.2 g/L in ethanol at 20°C. This solubility ensures uniform dispersion in oily systems <superscript:4.
  • Moderate Thermal Stability: Suitable for medium-temperature processing, with a heat resistance of 180-220°C. It maintains stable color in plastic processing within this temperature range, though it may decompose and discolor when exposed to temperatures exceeding 240°C for a long time <superscript:4.
  • Reliable Chemical Stability: Resistant to weak acids (pH 4-6) and weak alkalis (pH 8-10) without color fading or precipitation. However, it is sensitive to strong oxidants and may undergo discoloration reactions <superscript:4.
  • Cost-Effective Performance: Compared with perylene-based green dyes (such as Solvent Green 5), it has a lower production cost while meeting the basic coloring needs of general industrial products, offering high cost performance <superscript:4.‍

Applications

  • ‍mainly used for coloring different kinds of plastics, such as PS, HIPS,ABS,PC,PVC,PMMA,SAN,AS,ETC,Can also used in coloring oils, waxes, greases, fats, hydrocarbons derivatives, polishes, oily insecticides, and acrylic emulsions.
  • It is mainly used for colouring of polystyrene, ABS resin, UPVC and other plastics, and also for colouring of polyester stock.‍

What Are the Specific Applications of Solvent Green 3?

Based on its performance characteristics, Solvent Green 3 is mainly applied in the following industrial fields, covering multiple scenarios from daily necessities to industrial auxiliaries:

Plastic Coloring:

Focus on medium-temperature processed plastics, including polystyrene (PS), high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). It is commonly used in the production of green plastic toys, stationery shells, and daily necessities casings <superscript:4.

Coatings and Varnishes:

Applied in solvent-based coatings such as alkyd resin coatings and nitrocellulose varnishes, suitable for indoor decorative coatings, wooden furniture paints, and metal surface primer coloring. It is not recommended for outdoor coatings due to limited weather fastness <superscript:4.

Ink Industry:

Used in non-food contact printing inks, such as packaging inks for non-food plastic bags, offset inks for book covers, and marker inks. It provides bright color and good drying performance <superscript:2superscript:4.

Industrial Oil Coloring:

Utilized for coloring industrial lubricating oils, cutting fluids, and mechanical oils to facilitate oil type identification and leakage detection. Its good solubility in mineral oil ensures no stratification or precipitation <superscript:4.

Leather and Paper Dyeing:

Applied in the dyeing of synthetic leather and decorative paper, with the advantages of simple dyeing process and uniform coloration. It is often used in the production of green synthetic leather bags and decorative paper for furniture <superscript:4.

Handling, Safety & Storage

Consult the product SDS before handling. Solvent Green 3 can cause skin and eye irritation and may be a  skin sensitizer for susceptible individuals. Use appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, dust control) and avoid inhalation of dust. Store in a cool, dry place, tightly closed and away from strong oxidizers.

This is a summary only—refer to the official SDS for full hazard, first-aid and disposal instructions.

When should Solvent Green 3 be chosen instead of water-soluble dyes?

Solvent Green 3 is selected when the formulation is oil- or solvent-based and water-soluble dyes are incompatible, such as in plastics, solvent inks and non-aqueous coatings.

Does Solvent Green 3 provide stable color in high-temperature processing?

Solvent Green 3 offers good thermal stability for typical plastic and ink processing conditions. Actual performance depends on resin type, processing temperature and dosage, so application testing is recommended.

Can Solvent Green 3 be blended with other solvent dyes?

Yes. Solvent Green 3 can be blended with compatible solvent dyes to adjust shade or strength in non-aqueous systems, provided solubility and processing conditions are suitable.
