Solvent Black 3

A versatile black dye for textiles, leather, and plastics with excellent solubility and color stability.

Solvent Black 3 is a versatile synthetic dye widely used in the textile, leather, and plastic industries. It is known for its excellent solubility in organic solvents, providing deep, intense black coloration for a variety of applications. Its chemical stability and resistance to fading make it suitable for long-lasting color solutions.

Solvent Black 3 has four main advantages:

  • ‍First, it has strong tinting strength. The mass fraction of dye required to achieve the same black depth is 15%-20% lower than that of Solvent Black 7.
  • Second, it has good compatibility. It can be mixed with most solvent dyes (such as Solvent Red 135, Solvent Blue 35) in any proportion without precipitation or color separation, which is convenient for preparing various intermediate colors.
  • Third, it has excellent light fastness. When used in plastic products, its light fastness reaches grade 4-5 (according to ISO 105-B02 standard), which is 1-2 grades higher than that of oil-soluble aniline black.
  • Fourth, it has a wide pH adaptation range. It can maintain stable color in the environment of pH 3-10, and is not easy to fade due to acid-base changes, which is better than water-soluble black dyes that are sensitive to pH.‍

Application:

  • ‍Mainly used for coloring different kinds of plastics, such as PS, HIPS, ABS, PC, PVC, PMMA, SAN, AS, ETC, can also used in oil base coating, wax coating.
  • Used for printing ink, varnish, paraffin products coloring.‍

What are the specific application fields of Solvent Black 3?

Solvent Black 3 is widely used in industries such as plastics, coatings, inks, and oils due to its good solubility and stability. Specific applications include:

Plastic coloring:

It is mainly used for coloring thermoplastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It can be directly mixed with plastic particles for extrusion or injection molding.

Coating and paint industry:

Used in solvent-based coatings, wood coatings, and metal decorative coatings to provide uniform black color.

Ink manufacturing:

Applied to alcohol-based inks, oil-based inks, and gravure inks, suitable for printing on paper, plastic films, and metal foils.

Oil and lubricating oil coloring:

Used for coloring lubricating oils, fuel oils, and industrial oils to facilitate product identification and quality control.

Other fields:

It is also used in the coloring of wax products, leather finishing agents, and cosmetic raw materials (such as mascara base materials) .

Which solvents work best with Solvent Black 3 for industrial dyeing?

Solvent Black 3 dissolves efficiently in common organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and toluene. Selecting the right solvent ensures optimal color intensity and uniform application.

How can concentration adjustments affect the final black shade?

Small changes in dye concentration can significantly impact the depth of black. Maintaining precise measurements is crucial for achieving consistent color across multiple production batches.

Is Solvent Black 3 suitable for eco-friendly or low-impact dyeing processes?

Yes, it can be used in controlled low-solvent systems, reducing environmental impact while maintaining color fastness. Proper handling and recycling of solvents enhance sustainability.

How does temperature control influence Solvent Black 3 performance?

Temperature directly affects solubility and fixation. Operating within recommended temperature ranges prevents uneven dyeing and helps maintain color stability on sensitive fibers.

What quality checks are recommended when using Solvent Black 3?

Regular testing for dye concentration, pH, and solvent purity ensures consistent black coloration and reduces the risk of defects such as streaking or fading during processing.
