Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose

Introduction:

CMC (Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose), commonly abbreviated as carboxymethyl cellulose. CMC is a representative anionic cellulose ether. In industry, its sodium salt is mostly used. The degree of substitution, which is the average number of hydroxyl groups reacting with each anhydrous glucose unit, is equal to 1 when the molecular formula is [C6H7O2(OH)2OCH2COONa]n.

CMC is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless white or slightly yellow fibrous powder. It is insoluble in organic solvents such as high-concentration ethanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and acetone. When its D.S is greater than 0.4, it can dissolve in cold and hot water to form a transparent viscous solution. The higher the D.S of the product, the more uniform the substituent distribution, and the better the water solubility and acid and salt resistance performance.

Properties and advantages:

Hygroscopic property: The degree of moisture absorption is related to the atmospheric temperature and relative humidity. Once equilibrium is reached, it will no longer absorb moisture.

The CMC aqueous solution exhibits excellent properties such as adhesion, thickening, emulsification, suspension, film formation, protection of colloids, retention of moisture, resistance to enzymatic degradation, and metabolic inertness.

When CMC aqueous solution comes into contact with tin, silver, aluminum, lead, iron, copper and certain heavy metals, a precipitation reaction will occur; when CMC aqueous solution coexists with calcium, magnesium and table salt, no precipitation will be produced, but the viscosity of CMC aqueous solution will decrease. When CMC aqueous solution encounters acid, acidic CMC precipitate will be precipitated. However, acid-resistant CMC has certain resistance to acid solutions.

Solubility: The CMC aqueous solution is miscible with water-soluble animal gums, glycerol ethylene glycol, sorbitol, and arabic.

Applications:

It has now been widely applied in industries such as food, toothpaste, paper making, ceramics, dyeing, and oil drilling.

For the paper industry:

Preparation of coating for coated paper, can be used as a wetting agent, surface sizing agent, etc.

  • ‍Control and regulate the rheological properties of the coating and the dispersion of pigments
  • Have good film-forming properties, improve the gloss of the coating
  • Increase the retention rate of whitening agents in the coating and improve the whiteness of the paper ‍

For ceramics:

  • ‍Excellent dispersibility and protective properties for colloids, ensuring that the glaze slurry remains in a stable dispersed state without stratification.
  • Ability to adjust the viscosity of the glaze slurry, making it have good rheological properties and facilitating glazing application.
  • Uniform product replaceability, few gel particles, no insoluble substances, and good permeability. ‍

For detergents:

  • ‍Improves to the ideal consistency, enhancing product performance
  • Dissolves quickly without forming lumps
  • Has high transparency and high light transmittance of the solution ‍

For oil extraction:

  • ‍Forms a thin and hard filter cake on the well wall with low permeability, significantly reducing the water loss
  • Reduces the initial shear force, making it easier for the mud to release the gas encapsulated within‍

  • Stabilizes the suspension system, prolonging the existence period of the drilling mud

  • Good thermal resistance, good salt resistance, and resistant to various soluble salts

For food industry:

  • ‍Thickener: improve the viscosity and texture of sauces, dressings, soups, and ice creams.
  • Stabilizer: Prevents ingredient separation in products like salad dressings and beverages.
  • Binder: Enhances water retention, texture, and shelf life in bakery products.
  • Suspending Agent: Keeps ingredients suspended in drinks, syrups, and other liquid formulations.‍

For Pharmaceutical:

  • ‍Due to their excellent biocompatibility, high stability, pH sensitivity and adsorption to enzymes, CMC hydrogels, films or other hybrid materials have been widely studied in pharmaceutical applications, especially in drug delivery, Drug emulsification and stabilization.
  • The controlled release of drugs can be achieved by utilizing the molecular interactions and hydrophilicity of CMCs, and drug delivery can also be achieved in different controlled ways by fine-tuning the chemical structure of CMCs. ‍

For Textile:

  • ‍CMC and its derivatives are used in digital textile printing due to their thickening and color sharpening properties, as sizing and finishing agents in textile weaving;
  • It is used in the preparation of intelligent, antibacterial, anti-free radical, anti-oxidative textiles, etc.‍
