Basic Blue 7

Basic Blue 7 Appearance is glittering golden brown powder or paste. It is slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water, very soluble in alcohol, all in blue. The dye is brownish yellow in concentrated sulfuric acid, and turns red and yellow after dilution; It is olive green in concentrated nitric acid. The aqueous solution of dye is reddish brown after adding sodium hydroxide. On the dyed cotton, 10% sulfuric acid is turned into brownish yellow, and 10% sodium hydroxide is turned into red yellow. The acid stannous chloride solution turns red and yellow. It is bright blue on the silk and darker in the tungsten light.

Liquid Properties

  • ‍1. The coloring efficiency is high. It has strong affinity for fibers / substrates in weak acid baths, good uniformity, and bright colors (red blueish).
  • 2. The color fastness is fiber-dependent: the light fastness of wool/cotton is 1-2 grades, and the soaping fastness is 2-3 grades; the soaping and sweat fastness of acrylic/silk can reach grade 4, the dry rubbing fastness is grade 3, suitable for scenarios without sun resistance requirements.
  • 3. Chemical stability: in concentrated sulfuric acid, it shows a brownish yellow color (turns redish yellow when diluted); in concentrated nitric acid, it shows an olive green color; when encountering NaOH aqueous solution, it shows a reddish brown color, facilitating process monitoring.
  • 4. Good water solubility (slightly soluble in cold water, easily soluble in hot water, and extremely soluble in ethanol), after dilution, it shows a bright blue color, has strong compatibility, and is suitable for large-scale continuous production.‍

Application

  • Education and office supplies: Ballpoint pen ink, carbon paper, typing wax paper, and coloring of ordinary paper, with bright colors and smooth writing; also used in the production of blue ink and color dyes.‍
  • Fiber dyeing: Used for dyeing wool, silk, tannin-mordanted cotton, and acrylic; color coating for silk (such as coating with direct fastness turquoise blue GB, etc.) can achieve unique and bright colors, suitable for embellishing high-end fabrics.
  • Material coloring: Dyeing of natural materials such as bamboo, wood, leather, and feathers, with good penetration and lasting color; also used for biological/bacterial tissue dyeing and preparation of color dyes, suitable for scientific research and pigment industries.
  • Other applications: Marking pens, glossy paper, color paste mixing, etc. Some are used for blue coloring of water-based inks and coatings, enhancing product recognition.

Use condition:

  • Silk dyeing: carried out in an acetic acid bath. The dye is usually set after direct light fast blue GB or direct lake blue 5B dyeing. Dyeing and brightening, the resulting color is gorgeous, and it is not suitable for other dyes. It can also be used in the printing and dyeing method of grafting agent to improve the dyeing fastness.
  • Acrylic dyeing: It can be used for acrylic dyeing, its light fastness is 2 grades, soaping fastness is 4 grades, perspiration fastness is 4 grades, ironing fastness 4~5 grade, dry rubbing fastness grade 3, wet rubbing fastness grade 3, dry cleaning fastness grade 4.
  • Wool dyeing: When used for wool dyeing, the light fastness is grade 1, and the soaping fastness is grade 2.
  • Cotton dyeing: It can be used for tannin mordant cotton fiber dyeing. The light fastness is grade 1, the soaping staining fastness is 4 grades, the water immersion staining fastness is 4~5 grades, the sweat staining fastness is grade 4, Ironing fastness 4~5 grade, dry rubbing fastness 3~4 grade, wet rubbing fastness 2~3 grade, sulfuric fastness 1 grade, acetic acid fastness grade 4, and pure alkali fastness 3 grade.
  • Other: It can be used for dyeing leather, paper, wood, bamboo, etc., and can be used for making carbon paper and ball pen oil.‍

Precaution

Basic Blue 7 is an acute toxic dye.

Is Basic Blue 7 compatible with other dyes in blends?

Yes — it blends well with other cationic and some acid dyes to broaden the blue/green range. To avoid shade shifts, pre-mix small lab samples and adjust the levelling agent; pay attention to relative tinctorial strengths because Basic Blue 7 is potent and can dominate a blend.

What pH and bath conditions give the most consistent shades?

Basic Blue 7 typically dyes most consistently under slightly acidic to neutral conditions when used on protein fibers or acrylics with cationic auxiliaries. Exact pH depends on substrate — run bench trials to optimize levelling and exhaustion. Avoid strongly alkaline baths which may reduce affinity and cause uneven uptake.

How should I dose Basic Blue 7 for pilot trials?

Start with small, controlled lab trials using incremental dosing to find the target shade — because of its high tinctorial strength, small adjustments can make noticeable differences. Avoid giving a single universal dosage; substrate, desired depth and machinery parameters dictate the effective dosing.
