Organophilic Bentonite (Organoclay) — Paint Grade

High-performance organoclay rheology additive for solvent & water-based coatings. Factory direct — bulk supply & technical support.

Product Overview

Our Organophilic Bentonite (Organoclay) is an organically modified montmorillonite designed as a rheology modifier and thixotropic agent for paint and coatings.            It helps control viscosity, improve brush/roller/atomization behavior, prevent pigment settlement and enhance anti-sag performance in both solvent and select water-based systems.

Key benefits:

How to Use (formulator notes)

  1. Pre-dispersal: Add organoclay to the solvent/resin phase with moderate mixing (or pre-mix as a pregellate for certain grades).
  2. Shear: Mix under moderate shear; avoid excessive high-shear until after pigment dispersion in some systems.
  3. Activator: For some grades, a polar activator (alcohols or polar co-solvent) or pre-gel step improves performance.
  4. Optimization: Start trial at ~0.5% and adjust per viscosity, anti-settle and application behavior.

Applications

Typical application areas include: industrial & anticorrosive paints, marine coatings, primers, decorative & architectural coatings, printing inks, sealants and greases.

What is Organophilic Bentonite (Organoclay)?

Organophilic bentonite (often called organoclay) is montmorillonite (bentonite) that has been chemically modified (typically with organic ammonium salts) to make it lipophilic and effective as a rheology modifier in organic solvent systems and some waterborne systems.

Can I use organoclay in water-based paints?

Some grades are formulated for waterborne systems, but many organophilic grades are optimized for solvent-based paints. Choose a grade specified for waterborne use or contact us for the correct recommendation.

Typical dosing and how to add it?

Dosing varies by grade and target rheology — common ranges are 0.2–3% (some sources and specific formulas use up to 5%). Best practice: start with small trials (e.g., 0.5%) and adjust. Some products perform better if pre-gelled or added to the solvent/resin phase.

Packaging, MOQ and lead time?

Standard: 25 kg kraft/PE-lined woven bags; big-bag options available. MOQ and lead time depend on quantity — we support both pallet orders and full-container bulk shipments. Contact sales for exact quotes.

Safety and storage?

Store in a cool, dry place, keep bags sealed. Refer to the SDS for handling precautions (dust control, respiratory protection if dusty). Do not allow prolonged moisture exposure in storage.
