What is the difference between a defoamer and an antifoam?

defoamer (or antifoam) is a material that causes existing foam to collapse and prevents foam formation. Some products act rapidly to knock down foam, others provide long-term prevention.

How do I choose the right defoamer for waterborne paints?

Choose a defoamer that is compatible with your resin and additives, is low-odor and non-staining, and performs at the intended pH and shear conditions. Waterborne-friendly polyether or non-silicone emulsions are commonly used.

Will silicone defoamers cause defects (e.g., fisheyes or gloss loss)?

Silicone defoamers are very effective but can cause surface defects in some high-gloss systems if overdosed. Use at the minimum effective dose and prefer specially treated silicone grades for sensitive finishes.

What dosage should I start with?

Start with a small trial dose (typically 0.01–0.2% w/w depending on product and system) and run scale-up trials. Overdosing can cause defects or performance loss.
